Allah commands in the Quran: "So turn your face toward al-Masjid al-Haram. And wherever you [believers] are, turn your faces toward it." (Quran 2:144)
Facing the Qibla (direction of the Kaaba in Makkah) is a condition (shart) for the validity of Salah. If you genuinely do not know the direction and cannot find out, Islam permits you to use your best estimate (ijtihad) — your prayer remains valid. (Quran 2:286)
About the Qibla
The Qibla (القبلة) is the direction of the Masjid al-Haram in Makkah, Saudi Arabia — specifically the Kaaba, the cubic structure at its centre — toward which Muslims face during Salah (prayer), Janazah (funeral prayer), and certain other acts of worship. The Kaaba is located at latitude 21.4225°N and longitude 39.8262°E.
TaqwaTools calculates the Qibla using the Great Circle (orthodromic) method — the mathematically correct shortest path over the surface of the Earth. This is the method agreed upon by Islamic scholars and institutions worldwide including the Islamic Fiqh Academy and Dar al-Ifta. The bearing is given in degrees clockwise from True North.
A common question is whether North American Muslims face Northeast or Southeast. The Great Circle method gives a northeast bearing for North America because the shortest path over the globe curves northward. Both methods are used by Muslims in North America, with different scholarly opinions supporting each approach. Use the method your local mosque follows if you are unsure.
