The Islamic Hijri Calendar

The Islamic calendar (التقويم الهجري, Al-Taqweem Al-Hijri) is a lunar calendar consisting of 12 months. Each month begins with the sighting of the new crescent moon. A Hijri year is approximately 354 days — about 11 days shorter than the Gregorian solar year. This means Islamic dates shift through all seasons over a roughly 33-year cycle.

The calendar begins from the Hijra — the migration of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ from Makkah to Madinah in 622 CE. Year 1 AH corresponds to 622–623 CE. The current year, 1447 AH, runs from approximately July 2025 to June 2026 in the Gregorian calendar.

Four of the twelve months are sacred (Ash-hur al-Hurum): Rajab (7th), Dhul Qa'dah (11th), Dhul Hijjah (12th), and Muharram (1st). Allah ﷻ says: "Indeed, the number of months with Allah is twelve lunar months in the register of Allah from the day He created the heavens and the earth; of these, four are sacred." (Quran 9:36)

Ramadan 1447 AH is expected to begin around 1 March 2026, subject to moon-sighting. Eid al-Fitr would follow on approximately 20 March 2026, and Eid al-Adha on approximately 27 May 2026. These dates may vary by one or two days depending on local moon sighting.
